As a litigator, Ruth Skidmore pursues and protects clients’ interests in business, corporate, employment, real estate, and probate matters, obtaining favorable results in and out of the courtroom.

For two decades, Ruth has helped clients to successfully manage the risk they encounter when disagreements turn into legal disputes. She devotes much of her practice to commercial real estate litigation, representing developers, builders, property owners, management companies, and retail stores, though she also counsels homeowner associations and residential landowners with municipal issues.

Ruth litigates a range of real property issues, including zoning and land use appeals, easement and boundary disputes, plat amendments commercial landlord-tenant disputes, mortgage and land contract foreclosures, construction defects, construction lien foreclosure and receiverships.   She is highly regarded for her superior advocacy skills – The Best Lawyers in America© named Ruth the 2019 “Lawyer of the Year” for Real Estate Litigation in Grand Rapids, based on the recognition of her peers in the West Michigan legal community.

Apart from real estate litigation, Ruth also appears in state and federal courts in commercial matters involving shareholder disputes, breach of contract, employment relationship and workplace issues, protection of intellectual property, bankruptcy preference, and First Amendment challenges. In the probate arena, she pursues and defends trustees and personal representatives over fiduciary issues.

Clients value Ruth because she personally invests herself in each case – their problems are her problems. That doesn’t mean every case should be tried, and Ruth frequently provides the voice of reason, helping clients to understand that a well-crafted settlement can be a more strategic win than any verdict.
